Hose Torture and Birthday Wishes

I seriously need to invest in a sprinkler.
Or hire one of the 47 neighboring kids to come water my plants everyday.
I get home and the thought of standing outside holding a hose for another 15 minutes is overwhelming.  You would think its the end of the world.
Its not.
But I literally scroll through articles, facebook, twitter, and instagram on my phone while I do it.  Otherwise, the entire watering process would last about 1.3 minutes before I lost my mind.
Again, why I have not invested in a sprinkler, I have no clue.
Its like punching myself in the ribs at this point.  I am numb and apparently ok with it.

My latest article went up today and I have to say thank you thank you (http://activedgefit.com/throwing-out-the-f-word/), for the email/message feedback.  I truly appreciate your kind words, and am thrilled to be a part of your journey in some form or fashion.
It always amazes me how every story resonates in a different way with each writing.  You people are unbelievable, and your stories of resilience, inspiring.
Thank you for sharing.

Today was Brian's birthday...37...wow.
I met him when he was 25, and I came to him for help recovering from one of the darkest chapters in my life.  I wanted to get healthy again, and he offered an opportunity to not only regain control of my life, but ultimately pave the way for my career.  He kicked my ass with workouts, and honestly there were a few times in the pool I thought I was either going to vomit, punch him, or drown...or all 3 in that exact order.
He always told me I'd make a great trainer and to let him know when I was ready to start after college....well, that was 8 years ago and the rest is history.
Happy Birthday B, and here's to many more!

Another great day in the gym.
Folks were right on point with everything and I was pumped to do a handful of successful weigh-ins today.  My ladies are doing their homework and I love it.  10 pounds here, another 4 pounds there,...very cool.

Ok, bedtime...Busy morning and then time to get the applejuice keg ready for Little Miss P-Diddle.  Girls Night!  Watch out...

Stripped

The alarm went off early.
Too early.
Before I knew it I was cleaning benches, writing programs, and watching squat form like a hawk.  On some level, I get paid to watch rearends all day.  I'm ok with it...I figure there are worse things to get paid for.

A young athlete asked me today what I thought of Lance Armstrong and the whole ordeal...
My thoughts?  I'm more of a realist, surprising, I know.  Do I think he doped?  Absolutely.  Do I think a large percentage of professional athletes "dope" in some form or fashion?  Absolutely.  Do I think he should be stripped of his titles?  Eh, debatable.
At the end of the day in that world, its every man for himself...athletes, companies, etc.  So to testify against someone or null a contract all in the name of saving-face, I get it.  Not that I always support it, but I get it.  And fact is, if they were as diligent about testing every other sport, there would probably be no professional league of anything
Yes, we have many great athletes to draw inspiration from, but they are still human.  They struggle, they are tempted, and they are fully capable of poor decisions.
But I love to hear people say "I would never do that."  Truth is we have no clue what we'd do with millions of dollars and the essence of our identity riding on PERFORMANCE.  I'd argue that the vast majority would compromise everything just shy of selling our first born for the sake of doing what we love, being filthy rich in the process, and pretty much being placed on a pedestal.
Never say never.
Justin Bieber quote.
Teenager worth billions...oh the irony...

I had a great workout today despite my lack of sleep this weekend.  Nothing like a solid Monday lifting session.
Brian was back in the weights with Garrett and I after his half ironman this past weekend.  Something I have absolutely NO desire to do...ever...
I don't enjoy running enough to go that far.
I can't even float.
And the thought of sitting on a bike for more than 5 minutes without a donut seat sounds miserable.  But hats off to those nut jobs who love it.  There is very little in this world I'd want to do for 5 hours straight...and running, biking, and swimming are not on the list.  Nowhere near it actually.

Well, I am spent.
Time for bed and back to the grind tomorrow.  Love me some Tuesdays.

Circus Act

The amount of vegetables I just consumed was ungodly.
I may have overdosed on vitamin K. Things no one does on purpose....ever...

This will be short tonight, I've still got food to prepare and laundry to fold.  My attempts to be domesticated often just leave me tired and apathetic to the proper way to do anything.
I don't separate my laundry.
Horrible, I know.
If it bleeds, it bleeds...I'd rather not segregate my laundry.  Thus, I have several pairs of gray socks.  Its fine.  I like them. (No I don't)

6:30 this morning and I was completely out numbered in the gym...between Garrett and the clients, the gym was swarming with testosterone.  Amazingly, NO TALKING.  Such a stark contrast from 9am on a Monday morning.  Women everywhere and the oxygen literally being sucked out of the place.  It trips me out.  If they want to talk and move at the same time, fine.  But once a committee meeting starts mid-workout, I have to do an intervention and endure the look of death.  Apparently, I am a horrible human being for not allowing 5 minute conversation breaks during a workout...

One of the highlights of my day came in the afternoon as Brian and Garrett decided it would be a good idea to juggle rolls of athletic tape.  Long story short: Brian can juggle, Garrett can get pissed off trying.
It was comical.  Garrett was literally breaking a sweat and 3 tosses from a mini meltdown.
Of course I tried.
Failed miserably.
2 hands, 3 rolls of tape.  Common sense says the numbers don't add up.  I might as well have been blind folded and suffering from a severe case of trigger finger.  It was bad.
But I hope they got a good laugh.

Well, I'm about to go show 2lbs of chicken who's boss.  Have a great night folks!

Take It Off

The chicken I just cooked is unbelievable.  Its just chicken, I realize, but its the simple things in life like perfectly cooked poultry that one must learn to appreciate.  Right now, I am on a meat-high.  I've got my jazz music rolling and I am in my own little world....just me....chicken...salad...and Oscar, who is currently bathing questionable body parts in the middle of the kitchen.  Sort of fitting for this household honestly.  I wonder if he ever looks down and thinks "dang,...something is missing...hmmm...."

If I had a dollar for every male nipple I saw today I could make it rain on my entire cul-de-sac.  Apparently there was a shirt-less memo that went around this morning that I missed.  I saw more male chests and abs than I seen since spring break '02.  Every time I turned around someone had their shirt off....Brian...Garrett...Tyler...Zimm....Patrick....
Show me a line up of navels and I could correctly identify each of them.  Wow, my life just reached a new low.

Workout was awesome today.  I had shoulders and core.  It was a brutal shoulder circuit, and I was shocked at how much energy I had even through the cardio.  Gotta love days like that.

Well, it was a solid day with clients and I was thrilled to hear that several people were truly getting back on track in regards to food/nutrition.  Yes, vacation can set you back a couple of weeks if you're not careful, but why keep in that downward spiral?  Ask yourself this....Where am I headed with this?  If you're eating poorly, not exercising, and putting on weight, guess what?  You're headed for more of the same, which will only produce further discouragement.  Suck it up, accept where you are now, and commit to move forward.  If you're waiting for it to get easy, it won't.  If you're waiting for someone to push you, they may not.  Take responsibility for your own health and be bold enough to spark change.
That's my moment-of-passion for the evening ;)

Its 9pm and I have so much to do before hump day.  Make it a great one.  Keep moving forward!!

Domestic Violence and 9 Buck Coffee

Just sat down to dinner.  House smells like salmon.  Cat going nuts.  This is my Thursday night in a nutshell.

Last night I went to bed thinking that when the alarm goes off at 4:16 I might just punch someone.  Unfortunately for him, my husband would be the only person within arms reach.  Pretty sure that's domestic violence....even in Mebane.
I woke up in a fog and stumbled to the bathroom as most people would....sober...before 5am.  It was going to be a long day.

My drive to work proved to be amazing.  Two words: Dunkin Donuts.  No, I'm not referring to the fried dough...even with a sweet tooth, I've never been a big fan of donuts.  Wedding cake = another story.  I am talking about the coffee.  Dear sweet God I was coffee drunk by 5:32am.  I've heard people rave about their coffee, but I've never taken the plunge to try the original blend for 9 bucks.  During the week I keep Maxwell House in business.  BUT, I happen to buy a bag to try.  I had a coupon.  For the record, I used ONE coupon, not 10 or an entire notebook full.  One.  Extreme couponing is horrible.  It angers me more than it should because I always get stuck behind that one nut-job freaking out over saving 40 cents.  Meanwhile, I'm losing seconds off my life watching this circus act as my milk goes bad.  Just know that if you whip out the scrapbook of clippings in the checkout line, everyone pretty much hates you.
I get carried away.
Long story short, the coffee rocked my morning and I was sad when I drank the last sip.  Emotional low point of my day was finishing coffee.....ridiculous.

Workout today was legs and core.  I was pleased with the weights and included several supersets that made me want my mama.  I was a total meathead fest with me, Brian, Garrett, Jacob, and David.  I've never really lifted with females come to think of it.  In college I was always in the back with the guys while the vagina-cardio-convention was held on the elipticals.  They fell victim to the "I'm-going-to-look-like-a-dude-if-I-touch-a-dumbbell" mentality.  Ugh,...I still deal with that sometimes with females even now more than I'd like to.  Its a horrible misconception that leaves women literally running circles trying to get in shape and achieve the physique they desire.  Its crap.  Throw it out.

A client texted me today to tell me her fitness goals for the weekend and her cardio accomplishment of the day.  I was thrilled.  And truly, I was touched that she was excited to tell me.  She is slowly but surely turning her life around and fostering genuine self-love in the process.  Its awesome.  Another highlight of my day.

The last highlight of my day came when I was on the phone with my mom.  She made an analogy involving herpes and I nearly ran off the road.  It was so far from her sense of humor (more like mine honestly), and I laughed until I cried.  I was so proud.  Well done mom, well done.

Friday is almost here and I have big plans of working out, cleaning, and working in my garden.  I will probably say about 5 words all day, which will be fine.  I need some down time.  Have a great night folks and get ready for the weekend.
I'll have a few words about staying on track Sat-Sun tomorrow....until we meet again....niiiight!

White Spandex = Horrible Idea

Friday morning.
After 4 cups of coffee one would assume that I'd be awake, alert, and pretty much ready to grab life by the horns.  Yeah,...not so much.  As tired as I've been all week, I did not sleep well at all last night.  My throat is killing me and at 2am I was lying in bed sucking on a cough drop hoping I wouldn't choke.  That's not how I want to go down.  Mainly because there's the common sense element of why would you lay down with a cough drop in your mouth?  Eh, I get it.  But at 2am everything seems like a good idea at the time.  No?  Examine your college years.  My point exactly.

My workout yesterday ended up being much better than I anticipated.  Generally, Thursday workouts hit me like a ton of bricks because I'm tired from the week and its Back-day, so lots of heavy, compound lifts.  I was pleasantly surprised though, and finished with some cardio on the treadmill.  I was worn out from my ipod, so I threw on the tv and watched mindlessly until it was over.  Certainly helped the time go by faster, but daytime commercials are the worst.  If I saw one more advertisement for Depends I was going to lay my face on the treadmill belt.

The highlight of my day came in the afternoon.
Brian's triathlon suit came yesterday, so naturally he was like a kid at Christmas and was eager to try it on.  If you've never seen a man's triathlon suit, imagine the tightest pair of bikers possible with a giant maxi-pad in the crotch, complimented by a sleeveless spandex top with a chest zipper that could easily fit any 12 year old girl.  On a 6'3" male, this thing was a sight.  And not only that, it was white...why on earth would you make that in white?!  I was so entertained/freaked out - it was great.  There is absolutely no way I could have gotten one thigh in those shorts...much less run in them.  And how are you supposed to run as fast as possible with an accent pillow sewn in the crotch?  Forget that.  I will simply support from the sidelines.....and take pictures of this freak show to post on the internet...

Well, my cleaning is done.  I am fully prepped to teach hip-hop class tomorrow.  Now I just need to write up my workout for today and take care of a few odds and ends.  The only thing I'm not looking forward to is hitting hamstrings today.  They were sore for 5 days after my last leg workout, so I've only enjoyed about 2 days worth of sanity in the regard.  I will probably beat them up pretty good and then complain about it tomorrow.  Hey, whatever it takes to get it done!

Here's to Friday and a jump start to the weekend :)  Have a great day folks!

Busted Peacock...

So, I had to replace the salmon in my salmon-concoction with turkey this week.  My house was starting to smell like a fish market.  Oscar was basically running around slipping in his drool, and quite frankly since I already scoop his feces and clean up his vomit, I didn't need one more bodily fluid to deal with.  So here I sit with my turkey....still, oh so good.

Today was pretty normal.  My early Tuesday morning crowd is always so happy...either they are all full of crap or just extremely high on life.  I won't complain.  Its 6am and I'm sure on their list of top-10-things-to-do you will not find squat jumps with me standing there saying "get your butt down" over and over until those last 2 inches feel like hell.  Definitely not, but they work hard and come faithfully each week.  THAT, I can work with.

I shared a very cool moment with a client this afternoon...
She's over 60 years old, obese, and truly striving to not only make lifestyle changes but celebrate victories along the way, (she's got well over 100 pounds to lose).  We focus a lot on functional movements that directly effect her balance, stamina, and strength.  She was so excited to tell me that over the weekend she was coming down the stairs and missed the last step, BUT instead of falling (like has often happened in the past), she was able to catch herself and regain balance/control.  She literally lit up just talking about it.  It was great, and just such a reminder that EVERYONE'S fitness journey is different.  Goals, abilities, motivation, genetics, etc all play a role and are all very unique person to person.  For her, making day-to-day living more doable and easier in some sense, is extremely important.  Growing older and living alone is in itself challenging with health concerns,...so to improve functional movements is a major victory.  Very cool.

My day rolls on...
By the afternoon, there is no telling what Brian, Garrett, or myself might do for the sake of "Oh I saw this on the internet and I think I can do it.."  Ok, not always the brightest ideas and have ended in a few bruises and face plants, but nonetheless sometimes the risk is worth it.  Today, mine was the "Peacock" yoga pose.  No, I am not a "yogi" by any means.  I got into it a little bit in college, but this machine is not built for stretching limbs around and over other limbs.  This fact became very evident by 7th grade when I spent 7 years taking dance lessons and was still unable to do a left split...or center split....and my right split hurt too much to talk about.  At that point I knew I had no future in the circus or as a pole dancer.  What a disappointment.
Anyway, Brian snapped this shot just before my wrists began to scream:

For the record, it is not normal for a body to be in that position.  Ideally, your elbows are supposed to touch under your body.  That's supposed to be before your wrists snap or you eat floor....its a lose/lose.

Speaking of, I had a great workout today.  I hit shoulders, triceps, and finished with cardio.  Everything felt pretty darn heavy on shoulders, but doable.  I incorporated several drop sets and supersets to hit fatigue pretty quickly.  Overall, solid lifting session....tomorrow = leg day.  Ah yes, every time I turn around its leg day.  I have the urge to go really heavy, but my legs have been shaping up nicely with my current routine, so if its working ya gotta roll with it!

If you follow me on twitter you know that I recently discovered that I spend over $250 a year on gum.  That's beyond absurd.  If my mom smacked me for that it would be completely justified.  We'll discuss that addiction later at some point...

Bed time for me.  Holy crap I will hit the sheets before 9!...I am easily pleased...its sad actually.
Night!

Dino on the run...

Dreary Monday.
Came to the gym,...it was raining.
Left the gym,...still raining.
Most rainy days I find it a little more difficult to workout.  I was a little shocked that I had such a great workout.  Everything felt good.  Yes, even the sprints afterward.  I attribute part of it to the 40 minutes of yoga/stretching I did yesterday, and the other part to the 3 hours of sitting I did.  I read that entire time.  Amazing my eyes were not bleeding by the end.

I did shoulders/biceps today.  I've really got to get my arms in gear...biceps need to be a little bigger.  I find bicep workouts to be extremely hard.  You have to lift more for feel than necessarily weight.  And since its more isolation movements, mine are usually shot after 12 sets.  After that arm workout, I looked like T-Rex trying to run sprints.  I did 17, 20 second sprints at 12mph with a 40 second walk between.  Done and done.  Finished with some jump rope, (which makes me thankful for small breasts), stretched, and then it was time to hit the shower.
After having such a good run, I was once again reminded of how important it is for me to keep my legs loose...but lets be honest, us meatheads rarely spend time stretching.  I look into the pilates room and see Anna in some position that should be illegal and my hamstrings ache just watching.  The worst is probably my glutes/hips.  I cannot even sit Indian-style (which is no longer PC, but we'll pretend its 1987), without my hips hurting.  Horrible...

Devouring some chicken and cabbage right now.  Brian started his diet today...vegetarian Engine 2.  I cannot wait to see his bowels implode by Thursday.  Honestly, I couldn't do it.  I love meat/eggs too much.  Secondly, I'd be shooting whey protein through a needle just to meet my daily requirements.  I really don't know what it would take to make me give up meat.  But let's not test it..
I know it sounds like a challenge Zimm, but don't get any ideas.  I am already waving the white flag of sweet-meat-surrender!

Already 8:00 and I am pooped.  I didn't sleep well last night...way to much on my mind I guess.  I hope tonight is different...otherwise, I feel sorry for my early-morning clients :)

Night folks.

Staggering Start

Tuesday kicked me in the face.
I was in my coma-like sleep when the alarm went off and I literally fell out of bed and headed to the bathroom to slap on my war paint and get started with my day.  My eyes were bloodshot, eyelids were droopy (which should never happen at 28 years old by the way), and my right forearm kept going numb while applying eye shadow.  What a positive image, right?!...ha...here we go...

The morning was just one thing into the next.  Busy, but good to see college kids back in town.  Zimm is back (woohoo) and offering some good energy to the gym...even though I give him and Brian crap for talking in 3rd person like they're in some dramatic Matrix-like movie.  Entertaining to watch, even though sometimes I wonder if they even know what they're saying. ;)

Workout today was good.  My chest is extremely sore from yesterday, so hitting shoulders hard today was a trip in itself.  My mind was a little distracted, but about 20 minutes in I was good to go.  Some days you just have to let your body lead.  Turn the mind off from everything else, and JUST MOVE.  Today was one of those days.  I finished with sprints and now have a shooting pain in my rear and is extremely uncomfortable.  I can honestly feel it every single step I take with my left foot.  Tomorrow I'll have to do some much needed stretching and get on that foam roller like a handy snack and have at it...
Does anyone know what I just said?....Me neither...

I received over 3 pounds in coffee today as Christmas gifts.  Fabulous.  I will be caffeine drunk until Easter.

Ok, time for bed...I've got other stuff I need to cover, but right now I can hardly think straight and its almost 9:30.  My body hates me.  Night night.

Food prep and brownie-blowout

Just started cooking for Thanksgiving and as I ripped open the brownie mix it exploded all over me and the floor.  Aaaaand, here we go.  I've got 4 more things to make, and if this is any indication of how its going to go I'm in trouble.

Today was a short work day, but certainly felt long enough.  It was a busy morning as Brian and I ran around like chickens with our heads cut off...needless to say I was sweating profusely.  I've got to seriously do something about that.  Honestly, if I had the means to get botox shots in my sweat glands I would do it in a heartbeat.  I remember taking acrobatics when I was younger and being the only person wearing my jazz shoes so my sweaty feet would not slip on the mats.  "How'd you bust your hip Meredith?"..."Oh, ya know...just doing a cartwheel with sweaty feet"....ridiculous.  All that to say it was a hectic, sweaty morning....

Then Zimm stopped in for a little welcome-home-from-college workout...great to see him!  We got to catch up for a bit which was great.  Speaking in his typical "tour" lingo, his seems to be rolling along nicely as he navigates junior year of college.
Workout today was solid.  I tried this pre-workout supplement that Brian bought and dear lord was I sweating.  Not sure what the caffeine content was, but I had cold sweats and felt slightly nauseous.  Ha.  I was able to keep the weights heavy though, so at that point I didn't really care how I felt.  It was shoulders and biceps today, and I am really digging the partial pull-ups on the rings for biceps.  Neutral position, a little 10 pounder hanging from the waist, then only pulling up to 90 degrees in the elbow...LOVE IT!  You might think that only pulling up halfway would be easier...ha, not so much.  Get your back out of the pull and then watch those biceps work baby!  Good lord I get way too excited over this stuff...

Ok,...Thanksgiving...
When I honestly think about it, we have soooo much to be grateful for on a daily basis.  Sadly, we usually let them slip into the back of our minds until we sometimes lose sight of the vary things that bring us contentment, joy, and satisfaction in life.  Here's my list of things I'm thankful for this year (and yes I will probably leave out some)...

* my basic needs are met everyday with no worry
* the opportunity to do what I love everyday
* the various personalities I get to work with...especially the ones who push me professionally
* friends who are honest, hold me accountable, and love me with all my flaws
* energy to get through 24 hours at a time
* family who are supportive, crazy, and keep my therapist in business
* OCD....it keeps me chronically on time, clean, and more organized than any one human being should be
* adversity
* peanut butter and 2-ply toilet paper (duh)

Oh and the list could go on...

Whew...ok, brownies are done and Ryan and begging for one...ummm, not going to happen.  Poor kid is going to do a number on his intestines tomorrow,...the brownie can wait.

Have a lovely Thanksgiving,...keep your blessings in mind, especially when a family member finishes off the last roll and you're ready to put them in a choke hold.  I totally understand...

:) Niiiight!

Attack mode!!

Starting Monday off with a bang.

After my Saturday morning run, I was able to catch up on some rest during the weekend...the hurricane helped as well.  I simply didn't feel like doing much when its pouring down rain and the wind is gusting over 40 mph....oh, and my neighbor's dog was still barking in the backyard.  I may not be a dog-lover, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out there's something wrong with that. Either find a dog with damaged vocal chords, or bring the thing inside.

I was pretty worthless on Sunday...which I needed.  My mom always reminds me that I have to give myself permission to relax.  It's true....I rarely slow down and then get to the point that I completely crash.  Not cool.

SOOOO....lets talk workout.
Today I started my next strength/power phase, and went to 4-6 reps on all my lifts.  Whew, what a mental-shift!  You would think a rep is a rep, but each rep range has to be attacked differently.  I immediately thought of my husband who is a baseball pitcher.  He went from a starter to mid-relief after being drafted and explained to me that each mind set is very different...from your starters, to relief, to closers.  Still pitching from the mound, but different approach.  I thought about that quite a bit while I was lifting...
With the 6-8 rep range I felt like the first 2 would always feel a little easier than the last 2...sometimes a huge difference.  Because, well, I essentially had 6-8 reps to get to failure.  But with 4-6 reps, I needed to be that much closer to failure at rep 1 so that my journey to failure only took 3-5 more!  Thus, everything was heavy as hell from the start.  A couple of times I couldn't even get the weight into position and needed Brian to spot me.  My arms were shaking like I was having a seizure right there in the gym.  There was absolutely no time to let up.  I felt like I had to be in attack mode from the start.  I reached a whole new level of nuts today in the gym, but I had a blast doing it.

My upper split/lifts remained the same as last week, just with heavier weights.  A few numbers for the day....last 2 sets of DB bench press with 55's...last 2 sets of bent over row at 130lbs...BB curls at 50...French press at 45....overall, great lifting day.  I finished with sprints followed by some easy cardio.  I will sleep like a baby tonight....minus the whole crapping-my-pants thing.

Great to have Zimm in on the workout today!  He was able to join in on all the ridiculousness that goes on from 12-2 at the gym.  And there's certainly a whole lot of that...

Just finished some squash, chicken, and asparagus.  Absolutely love asparagus, but it makes my urine smell like a science experiment.  I bet when God made it, he thought to himself, "hey, you know what would be funny..."  The same thing he said when 95% of my friends were born...which is partly why we're friends...
Not even going to try and explain some family members.  But you know that verse "Jesus wept." ??  Yeah, enough said.

Speaking of family, here's a little picture of me and my darling niece Payton from her "official" birthday celebration this weekend...
That was the highlight of my weekend right there.
Ok, that, and when any suspicion I had about Lady GaGa being an attractive male was completely debunked last night on the VMAs.  Seriously, make up your mind, this is exhausting.

Eh, time for some shut-eye...it was a long day and I am in much need of some rest :)  Night!

Eat, sleep, lift...

Joining twitter was probably one of the best decisions I've made in awhile....which clearly speaks volumes about my decision making.  Seriously though, I follow only a handful of people, but about 6 of them are comedians based out of CA.  I laugh all day....literally, all day.  I read some of them to Brian and he immediately shakes his head.  Meanwhile I'm over there trying not to wet the seat.  Most of them are complete toilet-talk, as mom would say, but perhaps their crude humor makes me feel ok about my own line of decency I seem to cross regularly.  Eh, what do ya do.....besides send the hilarious tweet to your best friend so both of you can enjoy it at the same time!  Duh...

What a long day.  My God, it was long.  This morning was one person to the next, and I'm fairly certain that I reached my word limit by about 10:30.  I had to recharge during my workout time.  I ended up having a great workout and was very pleased with my overall volume.  Even from 5 1/2 hours of sleep (yeah, let's not go there), I felt pretty good throughout my entire workout.  I did core, back, then triceps.  I discovered last week that when I train my back really heavy, its hard for me to do core work right after.  My back is tight, and so my strength and range of motion is hindered going in the opposite direction (like a crunch/sit-up).  Thus, I did core first and was glad I did so.  I thought I would do some cardio after weights, but after an hour and twenty minutes of lifting, I was spent.  No cardio....not that I miss it, let's be honest.  Overall, awesome lifting day.

I just polished off a serious amount of peanut butter.  It's my life.  Melt peanut butter, mix in cottage cheese, crushed almonds, and a little bit of stevia and agave nectar...holy moly, you can thank me now.  It will look like brown vomit...just take it to the face like a champ.

Ok, I am exhausted.  Sleeping in tomorrow until 6am...woohoo!  There's a 100% chance I will be up and already well into cleaning my house by 6:45.  Its a little absurd, but my OCD is out of control.  No down time.

Have a lovely Friday!

Tuesday smack down

Tuesday is generally one of my favorite days....its not nuts like Monday, its not long like Thursday, its just a very non-controversial day.  Today, Tuesday punched me in the face and then proceeded to drag me by my hair until I was ready to cry "uncle" by the afternoon.
I got to work extra early to make sure I was mentally prepared for the day, and honestly felt pretty good.  By 9:15 I hit I wall.  I was dizzy, exhausted, and just wanted a nap...ridiculous.  And I truly hate when I start to feel like that prior to a workout.  As if its not going to be hard enough, let's add some fatigue on top of it.  Geez.  I had chest, shoulders, and core today.  I kept weights as heavy as possible, but was honestly struggling during my first exercise.  Everything just felt heavier than normal...so I gave it what I had, finished with a 4 mile run, and that was about all I could do...

By 3:30 my head was on the desk and I literally fell asleep for a few minutes while writing out workout plans.  The phone woke me up.  Stupid phone.  3:45-5:30 was pretty much a blur, and I was surprised and pleased to finish the day without banging my head against the wall.  Seriously though, it was great to be back at work, interact with clients, and just be on my normal-yet-severely-ridiculous schedule.  I enjoyed telling them about my trip to Texas and the many "this would only happen to me" stories.  Speaking of, Lora I was in a mini nightmare on my first flight back from McAllen.  It was a smaller jet...maybe 70 people total.  I start counting to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me before we boarded...yup, 13 kids....13.  I think I nearly went deaf from turning up my iPod so high.  It was 1:00 in the afternoon and I knew these little rascals were already at level 8 on a serious sugar high.  I was pretty much doomed.  Needless to say it was a long flight, but thankfully, there was no crying.  If they had started crying, I would have as well...just before I threw something...

One thing I did learn in Texas was that when a Hispanic woman offers you the "mild" sauce, and you're a white chick with a weak stomach, just say no.  There is nothing "mild" about it and you will likely lose your esophagus.  Lesson learned.

Ryan and I got in a couple of really good workouts while I was there.  My back is still sore from Friday, and my calves from the 6 mile run on Sunday.  Yes, you read correctly.  Zimm asked me if I'd lost my mind...yes, the answer is yes.  I just got in this weird zone and kept going...I will stop right there trying to explain it because I myself do not understand.  I told Brian today that I don't like the fact that I dislike running so much....so perhaps if I do it more, I'll start enjoying it.  Which is probably crap because if you think about it, if you really dislike someone and then go spend a bunch of time with them you don't necessarily like them more.  You might actually look interested in what they have to say but only because you are trying your hardest to figure out a way to care less.  I get it.  My experiment might fail.  We'll see.

Brian also pointed out today that I never post anything serious on twitter.  Ok, let me see if I can explain this....its called tweeting for goodness sake...I can't even take that word seriously.  And quite frankly, it really bothers me when people take themselves too seriously.  Is there a "Chinese proverb" writer on twitter?...exactly.  I will be serious when the time is right...and sharing a precious thought with my followers via phone with the possibility that they could be reading it on the jon, just doesn't motivate me to dispense deep, thought provoking material.  Because at that moment, I come second to a bowel movement.  I'd rather say something random to perhaps evoke a smile or laugh and then go on about my day.

Great to catch up with the Zimmerman bros today.  Nice workout guys... :)  And T, why was the plate on your back during planks a 35 and not a 45??!

Alright, I am already nodding off and I still need to clean my dishes.  Ugh....Night!

Here she comes....butt first...

Today was pretty much like Christmas....minus Jesus' birth, some tinsel, and presents for anyone but myself.  I honestly had a fabulous birthday....I couldn't have asked for more.  I've never felt more loved....well....except for that one time,...ok just kidding.  I can't say thank you enough to everyone who made it special.  Even birthday-cynic-Brian...who showered me with coffee, Under Armour, and a card with the word "bitch".  Fitting.  The funny thing is that, being the card-slut that I am, I told him what the inside said before I opened it.  I'd picked it up before in the store.  Its ridiculous, I know.

I woke up this morning 15 minutes before my alarm because I was so excited it was my birthday.  You would think I was 7 years old.  I love birthdays though.  It might have something to do with the fact that I never got to celebrate my birthday at school when I was little because of summer break...no cupcakes...no "happy birthday" song....nothing.  "Bitter, party of one."  Perhaps a little, but nonetheless I've partied as necessary ever since.  I like to remind myself every year just how little I've accomplished in 365 days, how small my list of friends is becoming, and the fact that I am going to bed earlier and earlier.  Its awesome.  Its way past my bedtime and clearly I should not be held accountable for anything I type at this point...the sarcasm just seems to pour out at an unbelievable rate...

All 3 Zimmerman boys and Kelsey stopped by today for a little birthday-bonding-time.  That was awesome, and truly meant a lot.  Kelsey made me a cookie cake with Duncan Hines frosting (the best), and I am seriously in a sugar coma right now.  I can hardly feel my face and I am sweating head to toe.  She even put m&m's on it...it was like sex on a cookie.  I gladly ate it.  My mom taught me at an early age that calories do not count on your birthday....I will not argue with mom.  I took it to the face...as I should have...

The Zimm crew also surprised me with a new pair of shoes!  It was like giving a heroine addict a new needle... New Mizunos, absolutely love them and they fit perfectly.  Yes, I will excitedly rock them tomorrow. :)

My sister-in-law and 2 nieces also came by today...when Payton said "Happy birthday Mena, I love you" I nearly died. Those girls turn me into mush...almost makes me mad.  Ha.

Mom and dad also stopped by and dropped off my new vacuum cleaner!  Wooo!!  It totally sucks,...I mean literally.  I was more excited about an appliance than the average person should be.  But I've managed to kill like 4 vacuum's already, so I'll take it.

Ahh...all in all, a complete day.  Yes, I still worked out, but any accomplishment in the gym fell second to how great friends/family made me feel today.  Honestly, I was flattered and beyond grateful.  Thus, I will continue to celebrate through the weekend...at least, that's the plan.  I'm 28, not 78...if you're gonna do something, got to do it right...

Goodnight people :)

CHUG CHUG CHUG!!

Boy was I tired this morning.  Staying up past 10 last night proved to be a dumb idea...shocker.  I was driving to work pretty sure that the guy behind me thought I'd been drinking.  At that point, the only thing I was taking to the face was my smooth, beautiful, protein-infused coffee.  Sucking it down like a pixie stick.  Some old school 50 cent blaring and my hot 12 ounces, and my day was off to a rolling start...
Every time I hear a 50 cent song I think about my sophomore year in college...and more specifically face-planting at this house party when I slipped on spilled beer.  The best part was that I did it as I was stepping out the door...so not only did the people inside get to see me eat floor, but I also gave a show for the people outside as well.  Again, you're welcome...

Today I was pretty pressed for time...I had quite a bit to get done during my workout time before my next client.  Legs, back, and biceps.  It was like a weight room death wish.  I started with back because I knew that bodyweight wide grip pull-ups would most likely not happen after an entire leg workout.  I kept my rest time to 45 seconds between sets...which is tough on power/strength days.  Its only enough time for me to suck some wind, curse, and wonder how in the world I am capable of sweating through dry-fit shorts within 15 minutes of starting a workout.  Mind-boggling.  I went for sets of 15-20 on legs, and mixed things up a bit from my normal routine.  It went well, but I can definitely tell I've lost some strength in my legs...not surprising.

Workout:
WG pull-ups 4 x 8-10
Lat pull-down 3 x 6-8
Seated cable row 3 x 6-8
BB row/ss rear flys 3 x 8 each
Leg press 3 x 15
Step-ups 3 x 15 each leg
Hamstring curls on machine 3 x 15
Leg extensions 3 x 20
Glute raise on ball 3 x 15
Standing BB curl 4 x 8-10
Alternating DB curls (drop set) 3 x 8 each weight

Overall, decent lift today.

Had a couple of former athletes stop by to say hello today.  I immediately felt old....to be at a job long enough to watch students go from a junior in high school, all the way through college, and now finding a career for themselves.  Holy crap, I will soon be in depends, eating oatmeal through a straw, and going to bed at 7.  Hell, all I need is the diaper and I'm practically there.  It was great to see these guys more grown up, finding their way, and ultimately starting to discover that the world does not revolve around boobies.  Ok, fine, only partly true.  Seriously though, it means a lot when these kids, (I should say adults), cycle back around and stop in to see us.  Just as much as we teach and strive to influence them, they certainly impact us.  If anything, training a group of teenagers on a regular basis is excellent birth control.  And when they're in RARE form, I'm pretty much ready to sign up for the earliest hysterectomy possible.  Only kidding...sort of...they are awesome and keep me laughing constantly :)

New food love: egg whites, ground turkey, spinach, vanilla extract, and a spoonful of cottage cheese...whisk, pour in muffin tin, and bake for 30 mins.  LOVE IT.  Its been a great alternative to my oatmeal the past few days.  Brian and them make fun of the stuff I eat because it often looks like vomit.  Ok, fine, I get it.  But this is coming from a man who will make these "green" smoothies with kale, spinach, banana, blah blah blah...it looks like diarrhea in a bottle.  No kidding.  It might taste ok, but I literally feel like I'm on Jackass about to drink #3.  I'll pass, and stick to my vomit...thanks...

Ok, time for bed.  I am exhausted...early day coming tomorrow.  Night folks!

Unleaded

Today was hard.
I hardly care to talk about it because I am so tired.  It was the first day of the coffee challenge, and to say I am struggling would be an understatement.  I squeezed in a 18 minute nap before my afternoon clients, which was probably the only thing that saved me.  I've been tired, irritable, and just not a happy camper.  I think the thing that surprised me the most was how "down" I felt emotionally.  Not cool.  Let's recap a mental time-line of the day shall we:

5:15am - pouring 1/2 my normal amount of coffee into my mug...and watching my sanity go with it...
7:00am - headache sets in...as well as the realization that its going to be a long day...cursing Zimm
11:00am - getting a "second wind" as I prepare to workout, thank God
2:00pm - ready to bang my head against the wall
4:00pm - would pay you to bang my head against the wall
7:00pm - let's not even talk about it...marinating in my own bitterness

To be completely honest, I'm not sure if this will continue tomorrow.  There are few things I enjoy...coffee is one of them...not hating life and feeling like crap is another....so in my case, the first is necessary to ensure the latter.  If its bad, so be it...at least I'll be sane and everyone lives.  I like to think of it as my gift to humanity.

Thankfully, I had a great workout.  Heavy on back, shoulders, and biceps.  I normally do sprints on Monday, but when I talked to Brian about the throbbing pain I've been experiencing in my right hamstring, we both decided it was best to take today off from sprints.  Seeing as how I only had 1 day of rest since Saturday's leg-assault, I was totally fine with that.  I went up in weight on several lifts...115 on BB row for my last 3 sets of 8...pretty pumped about that.  I should have tried 125.  Knowing that after the fact kills me.  Moving forward...

So, I honestly cannot believe its already mid-June.  The November show will be here before I know it...meaning that dieting would begin in a little over a month.  Great...I was just now getting caught up on all my beer.  Ok, kidding...but this go-round would definitely have to be more strict.  If they want a harder look, the dieting is going to be horrible.  Its one thing to go through this process when you have a desk job, but when you're on your feet all day, demonstrating, and interacting with people, its a whole new ballgame.  It just felt so much easier in college.  Eat, sleep, workout, and go to class every now and then.  Piece of cake.  Its a different story now.

As picky as I can be in the gym, it absolutely makes my day to see people do exercises correctly.  I mean, I get butterflies.  Dear Lord, what is wrong with me?  Can you tell my husband is gone...when this is what excites me??!  Seriously though, I look over today and see a woman doing lunges like a champ, and I almost threw my arms in the air like I was at the Superbowl...I was so proud.  Start worrying if I break out into a cartwheel.  Cartwheels are never ok...ever since they decided that it took more to be a cheerleader than a cartwheel, a few jumps, and numerous attempts to label it as a sport.  My only questions are still what's the score and who wins??
Exactly...

Well, Its 9:00 and I need to get some serious sleep if I remotely want to survive tomorrow.  Here we go...

Oh come on Brittany...

I like the new Brittany Spears song.
My life is over.
Its the first one on my workout play list, and since I feel like I'm at confessional, I might as well admit that I listened to it about 12 times today.  I've reached a new low.  Its not so much the fact that she went from slutty to completely nuts to a slutty, nuts mother of two...its more the fact that I might have an issue with being a fan of anyone whose first hit is "Oops!...I did it again."  For a brief moment I'm not sure if she's making a sexual reference or if she crapped herself.  Just saying, a little clarification in the title would've been helpful...Nonetheless, we rocked out together through one heck of a workout.

I had a PR today in the gym.  My last set of flat db bench press was with 55's.  Thankfully, Brian was there to set me up, otherwise I'm fairly certain I would have taken a dumbbell to the face.  I was pretty pumped about that though.  The pecs were working overtime.

Workout:
Squats 12x/ss split jumps 20x   3 sets
Hamstring curls on machine  3 x 15
Squat jumps 3 x 15
Hamstring pull-backs 3 x 15
Flat db bench press 4 x 6,6,6,4
Cable flys 4 x 6
Incline db press 4 x 6
Decline weighted sit-ups/ss pulse 3 x 12/12
Reverse crunch 3 x 15
Heel-touch 2 x failure
Cardio 45 minutes

Overall, it was a good workout day...light on the legs (which I am still struggling with mentally to wrap my brain around), ridiculously heavy on the chest, some core work, and then walking/jogging.  I was pretty spent after that.  3:00 rolled around and the temptation to just lay down on the floor grew tremendously.  Which would last about 2 minutes before "Meredith! How many reps on this?!"...."Meredith! Is this right?!"...."Meredith! What was my last exercise?!".   You get the point.  One day I'm gonna change my name just to mess with people.  It would be something cool....like Pipa.  Ok, that was a joke....no really....

So honestly, right now I feel pretty gross.  My diet has been fairly steady, but not as consistent as I need.  I have a sensitive system, so when I eat random foods which are not typically part of my plan, I feel like I'm about to explode, be sick, or have to chug Pepto until I'm flowing like the Nile.  Back in the saddle tomorrow....can't have another bloated day...for my sake and everyone else as well.

Wish I had some more to talk about.  Ok, honestly I do, but the arthritis in my right hand is cursing me right now and typing is slowly becoming painful.  I am officially 27 going on 87.  Have a lovely night, and prepare for hump day tomorrow!!  Yeeeaaaahhhh...

Dying eggs and Diabetes...Happy Easter..???

Its Friday morning and I just finished a little bit of breakfast and cleaning...2 of my favorite things.  I was completely drained last night, and once the Office came on blogging just simply was not going to happen.  By Thursday night I've usually met my word limit and can hardly find a dose of sanity to continue brain activity beyond 7pm.  Sounds worthless doesn't it?  Ha...

Workout yesterday was good...tough, but good.  I got Brian to look at my leg before I started, and basically make sure I wasn't about to die or have to amputate the dern thing.  Its my IT band...tight, pulling, and just painful right now.  He said I could push through what I could handle as far as running...so I wanted to try sprinting again.  I am so hard headed.  I remember when I went to get both big-toe toenails cut out a few years ago and they said "no running for about 2 weeks".  OOKKKK....so I got up the next morning and got on the treadmill.  I had to throw away the shoes because they were covered in blood by the time I was done.  I don't listen very well...BUT, truthfully, if I knew it would seriously injure me, I wouldn't do it.  I don't think it was about being a "Billy-badass" or anything, just basic instinct to do something you've been told not to do.  Like standing too close when you're brother is swinging a croquet mallet....took one to the jaw and learned the hard way...thank you David...

Anyway, I had back and sprints yesterday.  Lifted heavy on back,...reps 8-10 and today my traps are screaming.  I am working on getting my back width in proportion with how thick my back is.  So, yesterday was more emphasis on my upper back, mainly lats.  Sprints went ok, I didn't go faster than 11mph because my leg would start throbbing too bad....so I had to keep my rest time short to keep my heart rate up.  I did 20 minutes worth and then did 20 minutes lighter cardio.  Overall, it was a solid workout.

(Thurs) Workout:
Wide grip pull-ups 4 x 8
Close grip pull-backs 3 x 10
Single arm DB row 3 x 8 each
Bent over rows 3 x 10
Rear flys 3 x 10
Sprints 20 min, incline walk 20 min

Today I will do shoulders and chest...sort of a reverse-workout from Monday.  And then I am going to head out for some last minute Easter-basket shopping.  I'm doing one for my niece...I spoil her like its my job...it is my job.  I adore that child.  She adds some "fresh water" to the polluted gene pool we all swim in.  And I can say that because I came from it....yours is polluted too....I promise....

Well, its been a great work week....long, but good.  Not sure if I'll get around to blogging tonight or tomorrow, so if I don't I hope you all have a fabulous Easter weekend!  And if I wake up to find an Easter basket full of airplane bottles and chocolate, don't judge me...I live in Mebane...that's how we roll around here...
